Regular Events

The club hosts a variety of “regular” events. These events are in addition to others that are posted on our very dynamic Event Calendar and are typically run on a first-come first-serve basis generally at a low cost to members. These are great events to meet other club members and learn about the club. The events are also typically open to guests, although all attendees are expected to sign-up and if it’s an active event, to sign the waiver. Regular events include:

  • Climbing at a Gym or Local Crag
  • Monthly Section Meeting and Presentations – virtual or in person
  • Rock Review in June
  • Ice Review in January
  • Member BBQ in August

Climbing at a Gym or Local Crag

Regular Climbing Events:

During the winter, the Calgary Section meets regularly at either the Rocky Mountain Climbing Centre (10721 West Valley Rd. SW) or the Hanger (106-588 Aero Drive NE) on Wednesday evenings at a discounted rate (when available – ask the event coordinator about the discount). This becomes a weekly focal point for some section members who can’t keep from climbing mid-week. Once the snow disappears, we move outside to local crags on Wednesday evenings. Be sure to check the Event Calendar for more details and to sign up.

The Chinook Calgary Climbing Centre: 7130 Fisher Rd SE

On occasion an event coordinator will post a climbing night at this location in the SE near Chinook Centre. This is the original Calgary Climbing Centre and the Calgary Section met here regularly for many years. Lately our events are more regularly scheduled at the Rocky Mountain location. During the summer, the club heads to the mountains on Wednesday nights instead.

The Stronghold: 140 15 Ave NW

Stronghold is located centrally and many club members meet here to train. Good bouldering and many steep, overhanging routes. It can be quite busy.

U of C Climbing Room: 2500 University Dr NW

U of C has some of the best inside crack climbing in North America. Come here to hone your crack skills before heading to desert sandstone or west coast granite.

Bolder: 5508 1 St SE

Bolder has a great workout / gym area, as well as, of course, awesome bouldering walls and problems to put your climbing fitness to the test. https://bolderclimbing.com/

Monthly Section Meeting and Presentations

The monthly section meeting is held on the third Tuesday of every month at the Kensington Legion (2nd floor lounge), 1918 Kensington Road NW (elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor lounge). The exceptions are July when we are too busy in the mountains to have a meeting and in August when we meet at Edworthy Park to have a barbecue instead! After a short business meeting starting at 7:30 pm, members socialize over a beer (or two) or a glass of wine (or two) until the second part of the meeting when a slide show is presented.

These slide shows are presented by members or local personalities and run the gamut from expedition climbing, such as Andy Evan’s ascent of the N. Ridge of Mt. Everest, to the Calgary Section’s Annual Photo Contest and Christmas dinner served in their restaurant.

The annual general meeting of the section is held during the April monthly meeting each year.

Rock and Ice Reviews

Hosted by the Climbing Committee, these weekend gatherings are intended to provide an early-season opportunity for section members to get out and warm up on either rock (in the spring) or ice (in the early winter). Normally held over a weekend, the Saturday evening party provides much needed refreshments and social interaction between the big fun of Saturday’s climbs on easier terrain and the big fears of Sunday’s climbs on more varied and challenging terrain, for those who are interested.

Members’ Barbeque

Held each summer in August as a social get-together at Edworthy Park to chat about summer ambitions and exploits and section activities during the preceding year and summer, it’s a high point on the social calendar for the section. Of course, free beer and food is always sure to be a hit around a bunch of climbers and skiers.
