Avalanche Awareness Day – January 22, 2017

Avalanche Awareness Day – January 22, 2017
January 2, 2017 Nathalie Drotar

This FREE special one day event has been hosted by Alberta Parks since 2013 and offers Albertans quality, professional information and activities about avalanches. If you are planning to recreate in avalanche country this winter, this is a prime opportunity to learn about all aspects of avalanche safety, winter ecology and winter survival.

Last year Avalanche Awareness Day attracted over 400 people, a feat made possible by the 40 volunteers, 10 Alberta Parks staff, and over 30 exhibitors who contributed!

Activity stations and demos include:

     – assessing avalanche terrain

     – snow pit testing

     – beacon and transceiver searches

     – quinzee building

     – fire starting strategies

     – avalanche dog rescue

      – fat biking and sit ski (adaptive back-country equipment) demos (NEW!)

Come try it out and ask a professional about safe use of this equipment in avalanche terrain.

Learn from: Professional exhibitors that will be set up to share available avalanche training course information and the latest avalanche gear including clothing, air bags, beacons, shovels, and more.

There will also be a chance for visitors to enter into a free draw for prizes.

Important Notes: Complimentary hot chocolate and hot dogs will be provided, and can be enjoyed by our roaring fire pits.

Snowshoes are recommended. There will be free snowshoes to borrow for the day to those visitors who do not have their own.

This event starts at 11:00 and ends at 2:30.

Dress warmly and bring plenty of water, snacks, and a camera! If you own avalanche equipment, feel free to bring it along and ask our experts any questions you have.

**Please note that this event does not substitute an avalanche safety training course. It is highly recommended if you plan to enter the back-country this winter that you take Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 or higher.**
