This forum thread is for planning the Elk Lakes Weekend. If you’re coming on this trip, please read the info below!

Every year, the beginning of the season is marked by a sacred event, The Elk Lakes Hut Family Less Friendly Weekend.

This weekend, a tradition passed down through the ages, serves to pay homage to the ski gods in the hopes that they will bless us with a GNARtastic season full of face shots and free of season enders.

You have been selected, by virtue of signing up before others, to join this trip.

Here’s what you need to know:

    1. You are not actually guaranteed a spot on this trip until you send me some sweet, sweet monies for the hut. The cost for this trip is $50 for the hut plus money for whatever person drove you to the trail head. Monies are due by November 1st. I’ll send a reminder closer to the date. If for whatever reason your plans have changed and you won’t be coming. Please let me know ASAP so I can give you spot to someone else as there are people on the waiting list.

    2. We’re going to be slightly overloading the hut. The fees collected from excess people will be put towards communal booze. This is not a trip for people who need lots of sleep or personal space. This is a trip about having a ridiculously good time with great people.

    3. The plan (in case you forgot) is that we’ll drive out Friday after work and tour out to the hut under cover of darkness. We will be moving slowly because we’ll be loaded down with food and booze. Saturday is choose your own adventure – ski, snowshoe, ice climb, pray for merciful relief from your hangover – I’ve seen all these things done. Sunday many people are generally so haggard that just getting to the cars is adventure enough, but I normally go for some sort of ski tour.

    4. Food: we’ll do a potluck. I will round up a few people to help me sort out a main course and everyone else will bring side dishes or deserts. If you have any food issues, please let me know. Our record on this trip is vegetarian, gluten free, lactose free, casein free and we accommodated that just fine, so if you have food issues, let me know and we’ll happily work around it.

    5. Preparation: please go watch GNAR – consider it essential viewing prior to the trip/ski season.

Anyone have any questions? I’m super stoked! (as usual)

Great idea Phil, should alleviate some administrative efforts for you!

I can tow /carry in items required this year…..possibly a keg if we need one. I figured you solo’d the sled in last year so I might as well help out this year.

    Hi guys,

I will bring a chocolate cake with some Brazilian Brigadeiro on top of the cake!

I can also help carrying anything you need me to carry!

    Cheers
    Felipe

    Saweet!

Thanks for the offer to haul stuff guys. We’ll sort it out at the trail head but I’ll probably be dragging my duffel bag as usual (we can trade off if someone really wants).

Looking forward to this trip, thanks Phil and everyone else who organises and makes it happen! I’d be happy to bring parmesan scalloped potatoes if that fits in with the plan. Also happy to haul whatever needs hauling, not as much as Reade though, he’s a beast 😉

I’m looking for two volunteers to help Katherine and I out with the main course for the Saturday potluck! Who wants to help out?

I’m in! My top chef skillz may leave somethings to be desired, but I can buy foods, and with guidance I’m sure to make something mostly edible! 👍

Alright, I’ve got Felipe and Kiran helping Katherine and I with the main course – I’ll send y’all the plan shortly.

My brother Keaton and I will bring some sort of deserts.

    Hi Phil,

    Quick questions:

    1. Will all the meals be potluck style?
    2. Is it BYOB?

    Cheers!
    Felipe.

Okay, a few notes for this weekend!

    1. It’s a potluck meal. Katherine and I are making a big main course along with Felipe and Kiran. I’m thinking that we’re making pasta with a bolognese sauce. The only dietary restriction I’m aware of is a lactose intolerance. Everyone else, please bring an appy, side or desert.

If you’re searching for something to bring, I can fill you in on a recipe for backcountry-bailey’s-chocolate-fondue.

    2. It’s BYOB and I recommend bring more than you think you’ll need. This tends to be a fun event. Backcountry Daiquiris can be made with rum, mix, a ton of snow and are hilariously good. Boxed wine is also not a terrible idea.

    3. So, uh, the weather. Yea. Um. It looked so, so promising. And now it’s summer again. For those of you who are on ‘the facebook’ there’s some photos in the local scrambling group which give you an idea of conditions (not sure if that link will work).

Basically, for the very first time, it may not make sense to bring skis. This may be more of a hiking trip than a ski trip. Not the end of the world, but uh, not my Plan A.

I’ll update later in the week after I speak with K-Country again, but unless something drastic happens, if you want to bring skis, bring your scree skis. Otherwise, I recommend bringing late season hiking gear – good boots, poles, hard shells and lots of warm stuff.

    4. Departure Time – I’m updating the departure time, it’s going to be 6pm sharp, so if you’re coming in with us, please meet at the carpool at 5:45 so we can be on the road at 6pm sharp. If you’re going to be late, coming in Saturday or not going to be meeting us for any other reason, please let me know so we don’t wait for you.

    5. See you Friday! Stoked! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Dammit, I just realized there probably won’t be enough snow at the hut for daiquiris… We’ll adapt…

    And where’s the carpool location?

    November 16, 2016 at 13:31 #14163

    Hi Barend,

I’d be interested in biking! Just a normal mountain bike would do? I only got a road bike, but could potentially rent a mountain bike? How hard do you think the ride in would be?

    Cheers,
    Felipe.
