Discovery Hut is a privately run hut located in Wells Gray provincial park , 100+km north of Kamloops BC. The trip coordinator, Alan Fortune has long been an advocate of the area for nightly powder reloads and big steep lines in perfect glades. After our week of Feb 25 – Mar 3, the trip participants would gladly confirm Alan’s claim!
The hut is located at 1860 metres with fabulous views of Trophy and Table mountains. The terrain has so much to offer with tree runs and alpine terrain on all aspects. We didn’t get to explore the alpine due to low cloud cover and the avi conditions were not in our favour.
The other advantage of the hut is the logistics, you have the option of heli service “in” and ski “out” on a very picturesque 20 km route complete with glade turns & hiking trail switchbacks. The tour ski out provided us a bonus extra ski day !
However the important elements, good food and beverages are taken care of by the heli. Yes is seems that there was even breakfast beer!
The very best part of any trip are the people. Here we are, in one of the brief sun moments L-R , Sean, Mel, John, Frederic, Alan, and Mike. Not in the photo Tristan and Paula, for a total of eight people. Good odds to take on the pine martens !
But that’s another story.
